Autunno in Barbagia Village Festival Guide

A rotating autumn celebration of mountain village culture | Sept 6 – Dec 14, 2026
Open stone courtyard during Autunno in Barbagia

Event Overview

Autunno in Barbagia (Autumn in Barbagia) is a decentralized festival circuit that links 30 different mountain villages in the rugged interior of the province of Nuoro. Every weekend from early September to mid-December, two or three villages host their own open-house festivals.

During these weekend events, local families open the heavy wooden gates of their historic stone houses and private courtyards (cortiles) to visitors. They turn these spaces into temporary taverns, tasting rooms, and artisan workshops. Hikes and walking tours are organized around the villages, showcasing local trails, oak forests, and ancient archaeological sites.

Key Locations & Mountain Trails

The festival moves through the Barbagia highlands, which is an ideal base for mountain walking:

  • Nuoro Highlands: The central geographic point of the Barbagia region (40.3204° N, 9.3283° E).
  • Oliena: Famous for its spring waters at Su Gologone and trails ascending Monte Corrasi (40.2718° N, 9.4042° E).
  • Mamoiada: Renowned for its mysterious black wooden masks and Cannonau vineyards (40.2134° N, 9.2812° E).
  • Fonni: The highest town in Sardinia at 1,000 metres (3,280.8 feet) above sea level, providing hiking trails to Punta La Marmora, the island's highest peak at 1,834 metres (6,017 feet) (40.1192° N, 9.2534° E).

Visitor Advice & Village Customs

Entering the villages and exploring the courtyards is free of charge (€0.00 / ~$0.00). In each courtyard, local families offer traditional products at affordable rates, such as fresh pecorino cheese slices for €2.00 (~$2.18) or cups of local Cannonau wine for €1.00 (~$1.09). You will also find handmade filigree jewelry, wood carvings, and wool carpets.

Folk Customs & Language: Mountain villages are highly traditional. Respect local homes, and ask for permission before photographing families in folk dress. English is very rare in the Barbagia hills, so keep an offline translation app ready.
