Key Climatological Factors for Walkers

The UV Index Warning: From May to August, the UV Index routinely ranges between 8 and 10. The limestone rocks reflect the sunlight, which increases the risk of sunburn. Wide-brimmed hats, polarized sunglasses, and SPF 50 sunscreen are essential gear for any walking holiday.

Winds (Maestrale & Scirocco): The northwest Maestrale (Mistral) wind is cold and dry. When it blows, coastal paths along the west coast can become unsafe due to strong gusts. In contrast, the Scirocco wind blows from the southeast, bringing warm, humid air from Africa. Ensure you check local marine forecasts before hiking near sheer sea cliffs.

Summer Wildfire Risk: Due to dry conditions and high temperatures, the risk of forest fires is extreme from July to September. Open fires are strictly prohibited across the island. Monitor local forestry bulletins daily before headwater walking or multi-day mountain trips.
