Practical Tips & Safety for Sardinia

Make sure you are prepared before exploring the trails of Sardinia. Learn about local cash preferences, safety tips, English levels, and how to avoid costly driving and transport traps.

Do they speak English in Sardinia?

English is spoken decently by hotel staff, guides, and restaurant workers in major tourist hubs such as Cagliari, Olbia, Alghero, and high-end resorts. However, in smaller mountain villages (such as Orgosolo, Fonni, or Torralba) and off-grid agriturismi, locals speak Sardinian or Italian, and English is very limited. We recommend downloading an offline Italian translator pack on your mobile device and learning basic Italian phrases to get around smoothly.

Payment Preferences: Cash or Cards?

Contactless and credit card payments are widely accepted in supermarkets, major hotels, and restaurants. However, there are significant exceptions that tourists must prepare for:

  • Cash-Only Sights: Entrance to the Gola di Gorropu canyon is strictly cash-only (€6.00 / ~$6.54 for adults).
  • Remote Failures: In high mountain villages, deep valleys, or rural agriturismi, mobile card terminals routinely lose network signal, requiring cash.
  • ATM Surcharges: Avoid independent Euronet ATMs found in coastal towns, which charge high transaction fees. Use bank-owned ATMs (Postamat or major Italian banks) to withdraw currency.

Safety, Pickpockets & Valuables

Sardinia has some of the lowest crime rates in Italy and is extremely safe for solo travelers and walking groups. Violent crime is virtually non-existent. However, opportunistic theft does occur during the busy summer months:

  • Pickpocketing: Watch your belongings in crowded spaces, particularly on Cagliari urban buses (CTM routes 1 and 9 connecting the train station to Poetto Beach) and at busy beaches like La Pelosa in Stintino.
  • Vehicle Break-Ins: Never leave bags, wallets, or electronics visible inside your rental car when parked at remote trailheads. Thieves scan trailhead parking lots for target vehicles.

Driving Rules & restricted traffic zones (ZTL)

If you rent a vehicle to access remote trailheads, you must understand local regulations:

  • ZTL Zones: Historic centers in Cagliari, Olbia, and Alghero have Limited Traffic Zones (ZTL - Zona a Traffico Limitato). If you drive past the warning signs, automated cameras record your license plate, resulting in a fine of €80.00 to €100.00 (~$87.20 to ~$109.00) billed to your rental credit card.
  • Parking Colors: White lines are free for all vehicles. Blue lines are paid parking (pay at the ticket machine or via the DropTicket app). Yellow lines are strictly reserved for residents or disabled drivers.
  • International Driving Permit (IDP): If you hold a non-EU driver's license (such as from the US, Canada, or Australia), you must carry a physical International Driving Permit alongside your national license. Rental desks at Cagliari (CAG) and Olbia (OLB) airports will refuse to hand over the car keys without this permit.
