Girotonno is an international food festival celebrating the ancient red tuna harvest (mattanza) of southwestern Sardinia. The festival takes place in Carloforte, a unique town on San Pietro Island founded by Genoese coral fishers who migrated from Tabarka, Tunisia. The locals speak Tabarchino, a Genoese dialect, and their cuisine blends Ligurian and North African styles.
The festival centers around an international culinary competition where master chefs from around the world prepare innovative red tuna dishes. The harbor waterfront is transformed into a food court (Tuna Village) with tasting stands, alongside craft markets, live concerts, and culinary workshops.
The festival takes place at Carloforte Harbor:
Entrance to the festival area and craft market is free. To sample tuna dishes prepared by the international competitors, you purchase a tasting ticket card at the festival booths. The card costs €15.00 to €20.00 (~$16.35 to ~$21.80) and includes a tuna dish, a dessert, and a glass of local Carignano del Sulcis wine.
Ferry Details: Ferries are operated by Delcomar and run hourly. A round-trip ticket for a foot passenger is approximately €10.00 (~$10.90), while bringing a rental vehicle costs about €30.00 (~$32.70) depending on the vehicle size.
