Traditional Costumes at Festa di Sant'Efisio

Event Overview

The Festa di Sant'Efisio is a major religious and cultural event in Sardinia, celebrated annually since 1657. It honors Saint Ephysius, who is credited with saving Cagliari from a devastating plague epidemic in 1656. Over four days, a grand procession carrying the statue of the saint travels from Cagliari to the seaside ruins of Nora (near Pula) and back, covering a total distance of 39 kilometres (24.2 miles).

The event brings together over 3,000 participants from every corner of Sardinia, dressed in ornate historical folk costumes featuring complex gold embroidery, delicate lace, and family jewels passed down through generations. The parade includes decorated oxcarts (traccas), horse riders, and musicians playing the launeddas (an ancient Sardinian triple-pipe woodwind instrument).

The procession follows a historical coastal path:

  • May 1 - Start (Cagliari): Departs from the Church of Sant'Efisio in the Stampace district (39.2195° N, 9.1124° E) at 12:00. The streets are carpeted in pink, red, and yellow flower petals (sa ramadura).
  • May 2 - Coastal Route: The procession crosses the lagoon area of La Maddalena Spiaggia (39.1458° N, 9.0321° E) and moves through Sarroch to the coastal chapel in Nora.
  • May 3 - Sanctuary (Nora): Religious services are held in the beachfront Church of Sant'Efisio in Nora (38.9855° N, 9.0156° E), situated right next to the archaeological ruins.
  • May 4 - Return (Cagliari): The carriage returns along the same route, arriving back at the Stampace church in Cagliari late at night by candlelight.

Visitor & Spectator Advice

Watching the parade along the streets in Cagliari or Nora is free (€0.00 / ~$0.00). If you prefer seated viewing, the city installs grandstands along Via Roma in Cagliari. Seated ticket prices range from €15.00 to €30.00 (~$16.35 to ~$32.70), and tickets must be pre-booked online via the municipality's official partners.

Important Safety Note: The crowded streets of Cagliari are prime spots for opportunistic pickpocketing. Keep your wallets and phone secure in front pockets or zipped bags. Wear sunscreen and carry water, as standing under the direct sun on May 1st is highly exhausting.
