The Gola di Gorropu canyon is situated in the eastern Supramonte region between the towns of Urzulei and Dorgali. Its sheer limestone walls rise to heights of over 500 metres (1,640.4 feet), making it one of the deepest gorges in Europe. The walking paths are rocky, demanding proper hiking boots with excellent grip. Because of the limestone geology, the gorge holds no surface water, so carry at least 2 litres (0.5 gallons) of water per person.
Starts at Km 183 of State Road SS125, opposite the Hotel Silana. This path is steep, dropping 750 metres (2,460.6 feet) in altitude over a distance of 4 kilometres (2.5 miles). Descending takes 1.5 to 2 hours, but climbing back up takes a demanding 2.5 hours.
Starts near Dorgali. This path is 14 kilometres (8.7 miles) round-trip, following a relatively flat track along the Rio Flumineddu. It takes about 2 hours each way, winding through oak forests and oleander bushes.
Strict Cash-Only Entrance: Access to the canyon is managed by the Cooperativa Gorropu. The entry fee is €6.00 (~$6.54) for adults and €4.00 (~$4.36) for children. You must pay this fee in cash at the small ticket booth at the canyon entrance. Card readers do not function here.
4x4 Off-Road Shuttles: If you hike down from Genna Silana but do not wish to climb the steep trail back up, you can book a 4x4 off-road shuttle. The shuttle returns you to the SS125 pass and costs €15.00 (~$16.35) one-way per person, or €30.00 (~$32.70) round-trip (which includes the canyon ticket). Pre-booking with Chintula is recommended in the high season.
