Monte Sirai Archaeological Park

The Phoenician-Punic stronghold | Carbonia Volcanic Plateau
Archaeological ruins at Monte Sirai

Cultural Hybridity

Perched on a strategic volcanic plateau in southwestern Sardinia near the mining city of Carbonia, Monte Sirai is one of the most important Phoenician-Punic archaeological sites in Italy. Founded around 770 BC by Levantine Phoenician settlers from the nearby city of Sulcis (modern Sant'Antioco), this hilltop town was positioned to control mining routes.

Unlike other colonial settlements, excavations suggest peaceful cohabitation and integration with the indigenous Nuragic population, showing high levels of Sardo-Phoenician hybrid culture. The site holds an acropolis, residential blocks, ancient temples, a necropolis, and a tophet (a sacred religious sanctuary).
