Porto Flavia is a major milestone in industrial archaeology, situated on the limestone cliffs of the southwestern Sardinian coastline within the Sulcis-Iglesiente region. Designed in 1924 by Italian engineer Cesare Vecelli and named after his daughter Flavia, this non-operational harbor revolutionized mineral transport.
Previously, raw lead and zinc ores had to be loaded by hand onto small wooden sailing boats (bilancelle) and shipped to San Pietro island, a process highly vulnerable to sea weather. Vecelli carved two parallel horizontal tunnels (each 600 meters or 1,968.5 feet long) directly into the cliffs. Raw ore was dumped from trains in the upper tunnel into nine massive vertical silos holding up to 10,000 tons. The lower tunnel housed a conveyor belt that extended out of the cliff to pour the ore directly into cargo vessels anchored below, cutting shipping costs.
