Cascate di Sa Spendula is a prominent geological monument located in the municipality of Villacidro, within the volcanic Monte Linas massif. The name "Sa Spendula" translates in Sardinian simply as "the waterfall". Formed by the plunge of the Rio Coxinas as it flows through a pink granite gorge, it descends in three consecutive drops with a cumulative height gap of 60 to 72 metres (196.8 to 236.2 feet), with the tallest single vertical drop measuring 30 meters.
The raw beauty of the site deeply moved the celebrated Italian poet Gabriele D'Annunzio, who composed the famous sonnet "Sa Spendula" here on the evening of May 17, 1882. The local writer Giuseppe Dessì also featured the waterfall in his classic novels Paese d'ombre.
Critical Hydrological Note for June: Because the Rio Coxinas is entirely torrent-fed, its waters dry out progressively in late spring. By June, the waterfall is typically reduced to a minimal trickle or dry rock cliff. Plan excursions for geological trekking, canyoning, and forest walks rather than a rushing aquatic show.
Sa Spendula operates as a free public park with unrestricted, 24/7 access. There are no entrance tickets.
The canyon is a popular trailhead:
ARST Bus Transit: Linea 211 runs from Cagliari (Piazza Matteotti) directly to Villacidro (get off at "Fr. Lavatoio" stop), taking 1 hour and 15 minutes (€3.00 to €5.00 one-way).
